Wheelchair Accessibility Requirements
1. Ramps with a grade no steeper than a 1:12 ratio. Curbs provided so a wheelchair cannot accidentally run off the ramp or crutches or canes cannot slip off. At least 5 feet of straight clearance at the bottom of the ramp is provided. 2. Doorways are wide enough to allow for wheelchair passage. Some codes specify 34 inches, while 36 inches requires less precision of the user. 3. Sinks are located at a height of 36 inches. If space is provided underneath pipes are covered in case the user has no sensation in their legs. 4. Bathroom doorways are wide enough to allow for wheelchair passage. Handrails and grab bars are placed no more than 1 1/2 inches from a wall to prevent a person's hand from getting caught between the rail and the wall. Bars are from 1 1/4 inches to 1 1/2 inches in diameter to allow ease in gripping. |
